CAMBRIDGE-ROTORUA ROAD.
The contractors for the bush portion of the above road are at present labouring umlcr the disadvantage of constructing a road through the bush during the winter season. At the Cambiidge end Messrs Butler and Montgomery have barely throe-quarters of their work completed ; a little over three miles being formed, while the last mile is only underscrubbed, and even on the formed portion a lot of work remains to be done in the way of felling occasional trees that have been allowed to stand, &c. The contractors ha\e been unfortunate in not being able to keep a sufficient number of men on the ground, owing to the large demand there has been lately for men on jobs offering superior inducements to bush roads in the winter. There are at present only about ten men on this job. At the Rotorua end, on Messrs Home and Reids cont'iact, the work is being vigourously pushed ahead under the active superintendence of Mr James Home, who has between forty and fifty men at work', Europeans and Maoris, and although this contract was only let about two months ago, he will most probably complete his six miles quite as soon as the contractors at the other end. At present the very bad state of the Tauranga - Ohinemutu road is a great diawback, as all stores for Home's camp come via Taurauga. About one and a-half miles of this portion of the road are partly formed, the bush is felled for nearly three miles, and the underscrubbing for the whole six miles is about completed. A pedestrian can now find very fair walking along the line of road, and it is just possible for a horseman to get through, who, however, should be provided with a bill-hook.
