It is understood tnat the Government licivp received advices from the Pacific Mail Company announcing that the company hive accepted the pioposals'of tho New .South Wales Government with regard to tho San Francisco mail sen ice. Itbiokeout in a stable attached to Morgan ami Hayes Caledonian Hotel, and, despite all efforts, it spread thence to the south end of the blocks where its progress was stopped. On the other side of this wasClapp'sCoinmtiiciali Hotel, which was at times in gicat dauger, but was saved by the application, of wet blankets to the exposed surface. The county council offices narrowly escaped, but being of buck, the .flames failed to gain a hold. The following buildings were' destroyed :— Caledonian Hotel, Bacon's shoemakeis shop, Campbells butchery, Pattersons Glove Hotel, fScobie's draper shop, Hancock's shoemaker's shop, Wdlct's store, Ply and Bullied's draper's shop. The estimated damage is £10,000. 'All were), insured except Bacon, but the amounts are not known. The offices principally interestted are the New Zealand, ifnion, and South British. '
