RAILWAY CHARGES,

TO THE KDITOB. Sin, — I lately received three casks of seed wheat from England. The cask* d are 40 gallons each, and, therefore, cq>^o tain 15 bushels of wheat. On this wl^tK I have paid £1 6a 9d railway charges. The wheat was at Hamilton a fortnight before I heard of its arrival. No postcard or any other intimation of its arrival was e^er sent to me, bnfc I .was charged four shillings storage, in consequence of this gross -delinquency in railway management. The charges amount to more than Is 9d per bushel, or 14s perfqnarter. For little more than one-third of this charge wheat is carried the 1200 miles from Chicago to New York. Ido not for a moment contend that these three casks of wheat should have been' 1 carried at that rate, but it certainly is irritating that I should have to pay fully one-third the value of the wheat for its carriage from Auckland to Hamilton. It may be imagined that the railway officials did not know that the casks contained wheat. , On my informing them, however, I was given to understand that the charges were quite legitimate. — lam, &c, Jos.
