DUNEDIN, Tuesday.
The Hobart Mercury of the 3rd of May contains an article headed " A Case for Enquiry,"' referring to Captain Logan, of the Mannpoui'i, having on his last passaije from New Zealand, caused a passonacr who died to he buried at sea within four hours' steaming of Hobart. The passenger was John McKay, a compositor, who embarked at Lyttelton, and \\ ho died after a tit of delirium tinman. It is stated that Captain Logan buried the man at sea because the body being on board was offensive to the passengers, and because it would save the deceased a pauper's funeral, and would prevent the vessel being detained in port until an inquest upon the body had been held, and being satisfied in bis own mind that death had been caused by the effects of delirium tremens, and beliving that the deceased was a vraif and stray, without anyone to call him friend or acquaintance. Last Night. At the land board meeting, to-day, letters were received from Messrs Pierry and Young, declaring that they were bona ftdc settlers, and threatening the board with a Supreme Court action if the licences were not issued. These are the Tasmanian purchasers. At the 'meeting of creditors in the estatp of Stanley, Austen and Co., heW on Tuesday afternoon, the following was the resolution adopted :— u That the^ estate be carried on in liquidation, Messrs Ferrier and Dennistou to be the liquidators ; That when the estate has, realised 15s in the £ nett., without interest, any balance to be left to the debtors, ifc being understood that should the firm, within two, mouths, be to offer rv compensation of 15s, guaranteed this arrangement shall take the place of the arrangement above-mentioned.'" It is understood that the greater part of the liability to the Bank of New Zealand ia secured.
