AUCKLAND RACING CLUB.

Autumn Meeting. Svtijkimy was the first <lny of the Autumn Meeting, and was an unqualified siiccebs ; in fact, it may be safely, said it was one of the moat successful race meetings ever held on the Ellerslie racecourse. A fiver day could not have been wished for, it being more like summer than autumn weather, and the green and luxuriant pastures for miles around added a delightful freshness to the atmosphere. His Excellency Sir W. Jervois was on the ground, accompanied by the lion, the Premier. Impey's baud discoursed excellent music during the afternoon. The auangements for the day's sports carried out by the stewards was admirable, and although the day was not declared a public holiday the attendance, , especially as the afternoon wore on, was considerable. The racing throughout was fexceptionally good, the fields large, and the competition for honours keen. The bookmakeis appeared in large force, but the public seemed to pin I their faith to the totalisalor, and a very considerable amount of money was invested on the difleienb candidates. The start was a good one, Larry at once rushing to the front, making the running, closely waited on by Moonstone, whilst the others were in a cluster, At the back of the course tl\e pace began to tell, and Larry propped back ; the favourite and Normanby emerging from the rest and taking up the running. On issuing from the cutting, Normanby held the lead, Leonora being second, and tho others in a bunch, but on en^oiliig the straight The Poet r,nd Maori came though the Jep,flei's, and raced neck and uecK, but on the post Clifford landed Leonora, who was full of running, a winner by a length.
