NGARUA WAHIA CHEESE AND BACON FACTORY COMPANY.
A FUBLIC meeting was held on Tuesday afternoon, at the Delta Hotel, Ngaruawahia, to consider the advisability of forming a cheese factory in the district. There were about twenty-five present, and Capt. Powell was called to the chair. The Chairman read a letter from Mr James Runciman, who stated that he was pleased to hear that there was a likelihood of a factory starting 'at Ngaruawahia, considering it a favourable district for the purpose. Tne Chairman explained how particularly this district was suited for a cheese factory. He plainly showed the advantages of ft factory Ist. — Improvement in. the yalue of land, consequent on the increased value of> produce^ /2nd,J-Greater uniformity in the quality of , cheese. f 3rd.— The" general introduction of uniformity of system, better plant, skill, and supervision 4th.— That in Working up milk in such large quantities, and on the factory system, a larger yield of' curd can be produced in private dairies, and that the article of cheese can be produced at less cost in bulk than in small quantities. sth.— The advantage of buying milk in bulk, and of obtaining materials on the best terms. 6th.— The saving, in cost of labour, which being spread over so large a production, is capable of being reduced to the minimum. And lastly,, to promote a healthy emulation, creating a feeling of mutual independence, en* couraging intercourse, and introducing habits of system, enquiry, calculation, regularity, and order among the farming circles of this country. Some discussion took place as to whether the company should be worked on the co-operative system or worked on shares. Mr Walpo'le explained fully both the systems. The Chairman thought the co-operative system would not work snccessfuliy in this district. After some further discussion, Mr John Martin proposed, and Mr W. Macredie seconded, '"That a cheese factory company be formed at Ngaruawahia," which was carried unanimously. The Chairman proposed, seconded by Mr James, "That the company consist ot 2000 shares of £1 each share, 10s to be paid up." — This was carried. The Chairman proposed, Mr John Martin seconded, " That a committee of gentlemen be formed to canvass the district, to find out what support they could obtain from settlers in the district as regards the quantity of milk they would supply to the factory, and what number of shares they would be willing to take up." The followine gentlemen were duly proposed and seconded as a committee :— Messrs 11. J. R.ithborne, John Martin, William Macredie, David James, William Washer and Capt. Powell. . Several shares were immediately taken up in the room by those present. A meeting of the committee will be held on the 28th inst., at the ftfclta Hotel, at 2 o'clock. Mr WalpoleJraa invited to be present. " Mr William Macredie proposed, Mr Thomas Paterson seconded, a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Walpole for his valuable assistance, and a vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the meeting.
