DRAINAGE of the TE AROHA BLOCK.
-V , MrJ. B.,Whvib, M.H.R., receiver! the following telegram from the Surveyor General last evening :—: — Re Tn Aroii \. Drainaoi'. In reply to your letter ot the 12th inst., Mr Rollcston authorised the following lust month: (Ist.) On the further drainage of deferred payment block, visited by you and him in March last, a sum of six. hundred and, .thirty-cijjht pounds (LGJ3), of which L3!)0 is contributed by Government-, and the b'.ilance of L2BB from money in Treasury accrued from one-third of deferred payments by settlers ; (2nd.) A sum of nine hundred and sixty pounds (LOGO) for the drainage of Crown lands in the AVaitoa survey district near Bowler's land. Air Hales has been instructed to proceed with these works at his early convenience. It will be observed that the money is granted ostensibly for the purpose of draining the Crown lands, but it will also serve the purpose of draining the land sold* under the deferred and cash payment systems. The 'concession is tardily made, after repeated applcations by Mr Whyte, but it will be welcome, nevertheless, a recognition i of the justice of the complaints mail* by the settlers. Mr Whyte has received a., telegram ot similar import from the Minister of Lands, who is at present in Auckland.
