AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.

Eoual and exact justice to all men, Ot whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political. Here shall the Press the People's right maintain, Unawed by influence and unbribed by gain." ,

The Poverty Bay Herald, in a very silly article, based entirely upon a misconception of what took place at Maungaoronga, says :—": — " Ministers, for purposes of their own, or being placed under extreme pressure, may pardon Te Kooti, but what would the rascal's life be worth if he put in an appearance in almost any part of Poverty Bay ? Very little, we think." After this our con-temporai-y goes on to say that we have no guarantee that Te Kooti will not "commit similar atrocities to those lie porpetrated in the past." Is there any consistency in this? The same paper says: — " There is one thing for which Te Koori may be commended. It is that he has made 4 no promise as to his better behaviour in the future. He told Mr Bryce in full candour that what he had done before he would do again if molested by Europeans. A man like Te Kooti may have ideas respecting molestation which will not by a very long way coincide with those of Europeans." We do not know what our contemporary's ideas " respecting molestation " are, but we think stalking Te Kooti with a rifle would come very near to ours. Mr Whiteley King, a grandson of the Pvev. Mr Whitelry, who wns masacred at the White Cliffs in 1869, has despatched a violent telegram to Mr Bryce, upbraiding him for amnestying Te We tore, and threatening to " take his own way " of securing justice. This is nothing but pure braggadocio. Neither Mr King nor the Poverty Bay settlers have the remotest intention of carrying their murderous resolves into effect. 1 hoy have, we hope, too much regard for tho Law of tho land. Hunting savages is a game in which there is considerable risk, while very little satisfaction is to be obtained. Were it otherwise, we strongly suspect that the objects of popular hatred would have been sacrificed long ago.
