',A tajSETiXG of the stewards of the abj)ve|' "club/, was held at Hewitt's Criterion,,' ! Hotel, Cambridge, on Monday evening 'last. ' Present: Messrs J. v P^ Thomson?! (in the chair), Hewitt, A. BtKStubbing^ Alhvill, Forrest, Asher and- ? Dr. ;Wad/ r dington. ■'" v A Curious Pijocekdixg.— The secretary, Mr Scott, informed the meeting that Messrs Every Maclean and R. H. IL Fergusson had come td him and requested him to 1 sign" a patfor on behalf of the jockey club indemnifying them from all liabilities, past present or future. This be had refused to sign. Since, he had received the following letters from these gentlemen : — . i , ' , Fen Oourt, 3rd>Fcb ,'IBSJ. The Secretary Cambridge Jorkcy'Clul).— Mr Forgusson .md my&clt conferred together yesterday in reference to our liability as trustees for the iockey club, (on account of the lease'^rom' Fanthain and representatives of the owner, ofrhc grand stand) and we came to the conclusion th.it the o.ily course now to got rid of the rcsponsibilitj is to icMgn our membership of the jockey club. You will please take this letter astray notice of resignation as member of the Cambridge Jockey Club. I must confess I take tins step .vith much pain and reluctance. — I am, dear sir, jours very truly, EVI'.RY MVCLHAN. Gorton, Cambridge, Feb. Ist, 1883. To the Secretary of the Cambridge Jockey Club — Dear Sir. — Referring to our conversation of this morriiig, in which you refused to relieve me of the joint tiusteeship, I beg to inform jou that after considerable thought on the matter ,1 can sec no otlicr w.iy out of the difficulty except th.it ot tendering my resignation as a member, which I now do. lam veiy sorry to be compelled to take this step, but jou will sec yourself that it is the only way I have out of thu position which might become unplea«a'nt.— l am, yours faithfully, Roniutr Fkkgvssow Mr Hewitt explained to the meeting a few circumstances in connection with what preceded the above communications. It was hard for the club to saj* what liabilities these, gentlemen had incurred. They may have incurred extensive legal expenses, which, if, Mr Scott had signed, he would have had to pay for. On the motion of Mr Forrest it was agreed, '' That the action of Mr Scott in refusing to sign tho document piesented to him by Messrs Maclean and Fergns3on be endorsed by the committee of management." In the matter of the resignation ot Mr Maclean the meeting expressed their sincere regiet at the action he had taken. Accordingly it was agreed, " That the secretary be requested to wiite to Mr Maclean, (president of the club) asking him to reconsider his resignation, they very deeply regretting thu action he had taken." Tic Mr Fergusson's resignation, Mr Forrest drew the attention of the meeting to the fact that Mr Feigusson was not a member of the Jockey Club. He had not paid his subscription for several years, and he now consideied it was time they should give Mr Forcusson to understand that he was not a member of the Jockey Club, and also that Mr Fergussou should be posted as a defaulter. On the motion ot Mr J. All will ifc was agreed, "That the secretary acknou ledge the receipt of Mr Fergusson's letter, and inform him that they decline to deal with it until his subscriptions for the past two years, were paid. A Totaltsvtok. — Mr Heslop, of Auckland, wiote ottering to make the club a totalizator should the club require one. It was agreed, aftev some discussion, " That tho secretary be instructed to communicate with the various manufacturei ers, including Mr Heslop, to ascertain paitieulars as to v>rici>, &c." PiiouKVMMk for Autumk Mektixc:.— The choice of piogr.imme for tho autumn meeting cieated considerable discussion. Mr Forrest proposed, " Tint the club for the next year, at least, shall adopt a programme which is most suited for the encouragement of Waikato hordes.' 1 People in tho Waikato found the money, and it was now time they should cive the Waikato residents an opportunity of competing. He should, like the rest, like to see good blood come to their meetings from Auckland or the South, ov wherever they might come from, but in their present condition he did not think they could well afford to pay for it. On pi uvious occasions, when they had held large meetings, and ga\e £,100 in pizes, the books would show they had been left £3Q or £40 in debt each time, which the stewards had to make right. At their New Year's meeting they had eight races, the people wei c all well pleased, and after all they had a balance in hand. He would also suggest that the fee of membership in future be one guinea instead of two guineas. He also believed in the introduction of a trotting race into the progiamme. Mr Thomson spoke in a like strain, ne would vocommend that they go in on a moderate scale until they had about £200 at their credit in the bank. After a lengthy "debate on' matters of detail as regauls the programme, it was finally agreed to give £300, to be run for at the Autumn Meeting on the 2nd and 3rd ( Wednesday and Thursday) of May next. This terminated the business.
