RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT, CAMBRIDGE. Monday. — (Before Mr H. W. Northcroft, R.M.)
The Ngatikawhata Ejectment Case. (Continued.) Ciivrles Hitch man was called by the prosecution, and deposed to having been at Mangapiko on the 17th. Novembei last. Was in front of the whare from which the roof was pulled off. Saw no violence used towards the women or others in the whave, by the Europeans. jSTo assaults of any kind whatever^ took place. — Mr Hay here asked the witness whether Cashel had not remarked to him, when both were sitting in front of the whare, that the Maori women were being roughly used, and that Charles Walker deserved a plug 0:1 the ear.— Witness denied ever having heard Cashel make use of any such remark. Before .adjourning, the Court decided to issue a subpeoua for R. Caahel to give evidence. A.ll adjournment w-is then made until ten o'clock the following morning.
Acquittal of tlie Accused. Tuesday. Robert Cashel was called by the Couit. Pie deposed to having becu in the vicinity of the whare at MangapiUo duiini? its destruction on the 17 th November last. Saw no violence used oil the part of the Europeans, nor did lie see any assaults committed on the Maori women. Everthing was done quietly. Witness then most emphatically denied ever having made use of any such expression as that named to Hitchman in his cross-examination by Mr Hay on the previous evening. His Worship, without retiring from the Bench, called on each of the accused to stand up. He then informed them, in the usual way that they were discharged. Mr Hay then informed the Court he would ■wire to his adviser, Mr ilacDonald, <it Eangitikei, to know whether or not be should pioceed with the other informations, or whether lie would authoiise him tq withdraw them. The Gouit decided that the accused in tbe other charges should attend on the i following Friday morning, at 10 a.m., when they could either be discharged or the remaining cases proceeded with.
