Notwithstanding the prevailing scarcity of money and consequent dullness of trade, there are many encouraging bign& in this place showing confidence in the eeitainty of results m the mining industry. In new buildings I note Walker's palatial hotel, containing over forty rooms. Mr Jones is the contractor, and the contract expires at the end of tins month. Theie is every probability of its being finished, as the painters and paperhangers are busy. The new public hall will be 40 x 30, with two reading-rooms in front, 16 by 16. The contractors, Messrs Colebrook and Moore, have been delayed by the want of iron for the roof. The contract price of the timber work only, was The tru&tees for the Hot Springs Reserve have started improvements, and are now awaiting Mr Mahoneys report as to the best way to expend the £.100 grant.
