THE PROPOSED CHEESE FACTORY NEAR ALEXAN DRA . Public Meeting.

Thk adjourned meeting to consider the advisability of establishing a Cheese Factory Company in this district took place in the Public Hall, on Saturday evening last, Mr John Aubin was called to the chair. In introducing the subject, Mr Aubin remarked on the advantages this district would secure by taking the Te Awamutu factory as a guide. No doubt from their experience many valuable lessons might "be learned, and. money saveil in starting a new company. The first great question to be considered was the site, all could not be obliged by having it next" their own farms. He hoped some arrangement to suit the Paterangi and Te Rore people would be made in the choice of a site. Mr Jones, Puniit, handed in an estimate to the chairman for the erection of a branch factory in connection with the Te Awcimutu .factory, this estimate to manipulate the milk of 2'»o cows was put down at the sum of £705, including all expenses. Mr Jones explained that he had spoken to some of the Awamutu directors, and he had no doubt some arrangements could be made, and the Alexandra people join them with a branch factory. He was of opinion they were not able to go alone at present, and they would be met in a liberal spirit to the mutual benefit of both factories. The Chairman was of opinion that the estimate read was fallacious. At all events he did not agree wfth the idea ot forming a branch factory. They should have one of their own. Perhaps Mr John Scott, whom he saw present, could enlighten them how similar industries were worked in Canada, and as to the probable expenses. The farmers must remember the commercial men were prepared to assist them in the establishment of a company. Mr John Scott said he could not pive the meeting much information as to how such factories worked in Canada. He was too young when he left the country. He was of opinion that a bacon factory should be established in connection. One smoke-room would be the only extra expense, and buildings suitable could be erected at a far less expense than that of the elaborate Te Awamutu establishment. He was one of a committee appointed at a meeting held at Paterangi to gather information, etc., preparatory to establishing a factory there. Mr Jones was still of opinion that amalgamation with the Te Awamutu factory would best suit their interests. By joining it as a branch, they would have the experience of their manager, Mr Walpole, who thoroughly understood the bnsine&s. He would like to see a committee appointed to meet the Te Awamutu directors who might sec their way to issue GOO new shares, which could be taken, up here. The saving of expenses ! would be considerable. Mr McMinn, if not out of order, was | of opinion that Alexandra was too far out of the way for other parts of the district to' support the undertaking. He was, i however, inclined to agree with Mr Jones' proposal, and he thought that this meeting should appoint a committee to canvass the district to see what support could be obtained, find the most suitable I site, and get all data necessary preliminary to starting the company. Mr J. Scott supported Mr McMinn. ' Mr Gr. Finch pointed out that the erection of a small bridge at Waiare would bring a large number of farms within easy reach of Mangapiko. Mr Aubin agreed with Mr McMinn I that a committee should be at once appointed to see what site would be most convenient, either at Te Rore, Paterangi, or Alexandra. Mr Jones proposed that three persons be appointed to select the best site. He thought it would be unnecessary to purchase land^as'they could lease. This was seconded by Mr Connell, who pointed out that a good site could be obtained in the Government paddock from the town district at a nominal rent. There was plenty of water, and it was near the steamers' landing-place. Mr McMinn proposed as an amendment that a committee of five be appointed by this meeting to collect all information necessary to establish a cheese factory in the Upper Wai pa district, and to report on a suitable site at a meeting to be held on the 17th instant., at 7 o'clock. This was seconded by Mr McKinnon. The Chairman then put Mr McMinn's amendment, which was carried by 14 votes against 4. The follqwing gentlemtn were then duly proposed and seconded as a com* mittee :— -Messrs J, Hodgson, Jones, J. Scott, E. G. McMinn, J., D. Hill, and J. Aubin. The latter gentleman requesting hia name might be, omitted, owing to press of .business, the first five were unanimously eleoted. , A vqte of thanks, to, the chajrrnan, terminated the meeting.
