CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. In the Divorce Court, to-day, before Mr Justice Johnson, a decree nisi was granted in the case, Popplewell v, Popplewell and Clifford, on account of adultery with the co-respondent. Yesterday Mr Bruce, blacksmith, at Rarara, had occasion to discharge one of his men for some fault, and in revenge, apparently, the latter waited till the other workmen had gone to dinner, and then struck tyfr Bruce on the head several times with a- Jl6 inch rasp. Mr Bruce was rendered quite unconscious, and now lies in considerable danger. The police are endeavouring to find the man, wtioae name is Armstrong.
DUNEDIN, Last Night. . At. the Colonial Bank half-yearly meeting, to-day, tho report of the directors, recommending a dividend of 7 per cent., was adopted. The Hon. /Mr OJivet'.was'in the chair, and the proceedings were of an ordinary nature. Mr R. Wilson was elected to the directorate. The coffee palace operations for the year show an" excess of income 1 o^eri an expenditure of £3013, but the preliminary expenses, depreciation, etc., absorbed so much that there is a balance of £156 to .<the debit. side. ■< The' lessee of the building has consequently had to pay, tli*-full amouu'tfof his guaranty viz., £200. *• ' / The woolsbedof the/ Kaikoura Factory, (Rose and Gendininc) was destroyed by. fire ejffly,thjs atornj^g^ -Tue.insurancesi on the building and stock are : National,£3OO0 1 ft>y«fe.ff}C!Q9 imi tfev^fths<J,
£3000. The loss is considerably above the insurance, as a large supply of wool which had just been taken into the factory was uninsured, being some r distanpe away from the' shed. - ' " ' " ',
WELLINGTON Last Night. ■ The Customs duties for the month are £21,449. For the corresponding month of last N year , they ;vvere £20,113. The beer duty am'ouiitad to £592.' ! - Vital statistics for this month are 115 births, 44 ; deaths, 10. Sir W. Jervois held his .first levee this afternoon. A large number of gentlemen attended. ' ' ' The Hon. Dr. Pollen, chairman of the South Island Trunk Railway Extension Commission, left for the South to-day, to confer with his colleagues before sending in the report. The amount of the defalcations of the of the absconder Chas. White, amounted to nearly £1900. The Governor was entertained to dinner at the Wellington Club last night. There were 70 members of the House of Representatives present. The Longhurst case was considered by the Government this morning, and e\ erything is now ready to be submitted for His Excellency's decision.
