THE CAMBRIDGE WATER SUPPLY QUESTION.
A special meeting of the members of the Cambridge Town Board was held at the board office, Cambridge, on Monday evening last, for the purpose of confirming the resolutions, in the matter of a water supply for the town, passed at a former special meeting of the board. There were present :— Crs. Wells (chairman), Hewitt and Johnson. The Chairman, in opening the proceedings, briefly stated the business of the meeting. They were there to 1 confirm the resolutions passed at a previous special meeting, re a water supply for the town. On the motion of Or. Hewitt, seconded by Cr. Johnson, it was agreed "That in terms of sub-section 13, of subsection 12, of section 30, of the Town | Districts Act, 1881, the resolution passed at the meeting of the board on the 29th Deoember, beiiow confirmed." The Chairman explained that the public meeting of ratepayers, which was called for Thursday evening, was for the purpose of discussing tlie proposals continued by the board. A poll would subsequently be taken on tho matter dealt with in the proposals as confirmed that evening. When that poll was t.\*ken it was necessary to the adopting of the scheme that there should be a majority equal to one half of the ratepayers. These numbered 236. Consequently they must have 119 votes at the least in favour of the scheme, this number representing a unit over the half.' If 100 burgesses voted for the scheme, and only one voted against it, the scheme must fall through, for the reason that this number (100) would not give the majority required by the act. As to the financial view of the matter, £3000 was the sum proposed to be borrowed, and, supposing that the board' had 'to pay 8 %'o'tr the loan, the annual interest would be £240. An 8d rate, it had been calculated, would realise £260, giving only £20 ( annually towards the sinking fund. A rate of lOd would amount to £325, allowing £80 for sinking fund, thus enabling the loan to be repaid in something under ,4o years. After some further discussion, it was agreed to recommend to the public meeting that a rate of lOd in the £ be levied, to meet both interest and sinking fund on ,the loan, the loan to Ibe • repaid in 40' years, i , Towx Diuixage.-- Tenders were received and opened for drainage works in Alpha and Brewery streets. The following are- the tenders :— Mann and Dillon, £99 ; and E. Wilson, £118 5s 4d. On the motion of Cr. Johnson, seconded by Cr.'Hetvitt, it 'was* agreed 'that} >in the absence of Commissioners Nixon and Kirkwood, the accepting of tenders for drainage stand over until the next monthly meeting of the board on Monday, February 12th. , ' , ? This terminated the"proceedings. ' '
