The Rev. Father McQ-rath and Another Drowned. iSvdnby, January 13. Tjik Rev. Father McGrath and Mr Clarke were drowned to-day while bathing near Mma, on the coast, 90 miles south of Sydney.
The Victorian Railways. Melbourne, January 13. The 'Argus announces that the system now in force on the Victorian railways, of placing barriers on the platform prior to the departure of the ti'ains, will be abolished irom Monday next.
The English Cricketers in Tasmania. Hodabt, January 13. The match between the English eleven and a local team of eighteen concluded to-day, and resulted in a victory for the former by seven wickets. Morley took eight wickets for 40 runs.
Defeat of Mr H. Copeland. Sydxky, January 13. Mr H. Copeland, Minister for Works, has been defeated for the Newton constituency. It is expected that he will be elected for East Sydney.
Victorian Gold Returns. Mkukhjknk, January 13. The estimated yieltl of gold in the Victorian mines last year was' one 'million and seventy thousand ounces, an iucrease of one hundred and eighty-six thousand ounces as compared with the previous year.
The Melbourne Detective ForceMelbourne, January 13. The report of the Police Commission, which has been issued, strongly condemns the working of the detective depirtmeut. The officials of the latter de* partment consider the report grossly imtair.

Up to Saturday last additional tenders' to the amount of #72,000 had been received. The Government , has announced that^ it luu> not, as was reported at the beginning of this month, guaranteed to maintain the minimum of the proposed loan at par.
