A Native Arrested for Perjury. Yesterday.
Wakatutu, a native and member of Ngatekawhata, was called by the defence for the purpose of showing that the rent had been paid to Hoii, the latter having admitted that up to a certain stage he had authorised "Wakatutu to receive his rent. Filling the ohaiactei of agent for Hori, ilr Hesketh claimed he was of necessity an ad\ erse witness. The (Joint agreed, and gave permission to examine him as an adverse witness. The witness admitted having received a sum of £'27 ft om Mr Walker on account ot rent for Hori, and that lie had Horis written authonty to receive it. Hoii had denied on his examination that he had ever leeened such a bum or authorised, the witness to receive it; the witness, however, said he had received it and given it to Hoii. The witness was ne\t examined as to the payment of (MO for rent on the 3id December, by Messis Giice, Giace and Walkei. He denied having met thoae tlueo in a wharo at Wiiikaukau, when Hoii told him to go with them and take the rent. He denied having counted 20 soveieigns when handed to him, lie denied lie had received them into his hand, and that he had afterward handed them back to Mr (hace to put into the bank in their joint names, and that on handing them over the latter ga\ c him a receipt for £.">O. On the last point the witness was most positive Mr (liace ue\er gave him any receipt for tlic £.")0. He admitted that the signature of a receipt for rent for £50 uas in his handwriting, but he said the signatuio was that of a diunken man, and that lie was drunk when he signed it. When cross-ex-amined by Mr Hay, he stated that some of these tilings might have occiured, but he w.is diunk, and did not remember it. On the Couit lcsuming, an information was laid by Mr Walker for perjury, and the witness was arrested. On being searched, Mr Grace's leceipt for £.30, which he had denied all knowledge of, was found on Ins person by the police. He was subsequently brought before the (Joint, and charged with the offence, Mr H.iy appearing for the accused, and Mr Hcsktith for Mr Walker. He was remanded, on the application of the police, tor eight days, bail being accepted, himself in £200. and two suieties of £100 each. The ease has been remanded till Tuesday next the 10th iust.
