AUCKLAND RACING CLUB SUMMER MEETING. New Year's Day.

if i J The attendance on the second day of the above races wa#. very large,, the grand stands beingwellfilled lij>the "fair sex," who mustered in strongforce. Theweafcher was delightful, and the heat was tempered slightly by gentle b'reezesfronPth'o north, ward during the day. The Engineer band played on the lawn, and their enlivening strains added in no small degree to the success of tho meeting. The trains were crowded, and although the police had a somewhat arduous task in^ceping- backthe crush, no accidents occurred. The races were most exiting. 'Welcome Jack and Kingaak were the only two brought out for the Derby Stakes. The pace was not over smart until reaching the straight, when both put on a vspurt, but a call from Butler lauded IftVelcoinc Jack an easy winner, by a length. There was i very interest taken in the Derby race', for it was looked on as a moral for, Jack, Mr Walters' Piscatorioiis carried' off the 'Publicans' Purse, which was a very open race, and although Virginia Water was made favourite at even money, she failed to justify the confidence placed in her. Thts great event' of the day was the Auckland Racing Club Handicap. Piscatorioiis and Virginia Water were scratched, for they cpuld hardly be expected to be called t upon again after the previous severe^ faces. Welcome Jack was at once made favorite, and decided the betting, although he had such good company to contest against as The Poet, Libeller, and Tim Whifner. The betting was 6t04 on Welcome Jack, 3to 1 agst (Libeller, The Poet, andTim Whiffler, and 10 to 1 agst the rest. Owing to the start {baking place at the back of the course, a /great deal was lost to view. However, 11 they were despatched to a good starr, and disappeared into the dip. On emerging The Poet was observed in the van, making the pace hot, in fact he made the running throughout. In passsng the stand Welcome 'Jack held fifth position, whilst The Poet led to the back of the course. Here the horses closed, and Libeller looked somewhat dangerous. Tim was running grandly, but Jack was not to be denied, for he collared The Poet, and won by two lenghts, Libeller being third, whilst Tim Whiflier was fourth, being only beaten for a place by Libeller on the post.
