ROMAN CATHOLIC BAZAAR, HAMILTON.

The following report <from - our,, very special commissioner, though in type for last issue, was unavoidably ( crowded out :— The final result of the Catholic Bazaar held on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday before Christmas, is most satisfactory : each evening the hall presented a very lively and busy scene';' the bright light falling on 'a gay variety " of stalls relieved by flags and ferns, and' knots of thoughtful mothers buying for the little ones at home, groups of tall men eagerly oeseiged by fluttering figures, armed with bright miles and winning words, and at least half-a-dozen, 'raffle-tickets and pencils ; while the air rang to the 'gay strains of brilliant music. I The genjal spirit of Christmas seemed to hover over the place, and he must 'surely have shed from his over-arching wings peace unto all those of goodwill who so heartily aided this work of charity. On all sides there has been botli before and during the bazaar , a spirit, of, helpfulness, which it does one good to' remember, " One touch of nature makes the , whole world .kin,"— so 1( one occasion, like the pre&ent teaches us jjhe brother*hood of men— be tliey of creed* or 1 natibtK alities wide apart as the antipodts'. *' " It is impossible to enumerate' 1 flSrthe articles given, as well as the donations in money,' biit amongst them are' a splendid bride-cake, given by Mrs Jones^ won by Mr Robinson ; a large ship in full rip, won by Mr Cussen ; a handsome imisic stool, given by Mrs Connolly, ' won ; by Bishop Luck ; a large crayon pictnre, beautifully framed, given by Mrs Brennau, won by Mr .McCarthy ; a cuckoo clock given by Mrs" Jones," won' by Mrs Connolly ; a bride, dressed .by Mrs Kingsley, won by Mr Crowe ; a beautiful spray of coral, given by Mrs McGovern, won by Mr Kirk ; a Scotchman, given by Mrs Murray, won/ by Mr Crowe ; an elegant plated basket, given by Mr McLernonf wonby'Mf'W. , Cussen, and a graceful gipsy table, given by Mrs Cussen, won by Mr Knight. , , ■ • The total amount taken-at the various? stalls was ir ',f ' t•' , • '<',•;** ""* No. 1, presided over by Miss M. No. 4, refreshment stall, presided over by Mrs Connolly.— £29 Os 3d. Entrance receipts, collected by Messrs W. Chitty, AY. Cussen, and E. Pilling, £15 11s, making a grand total of close upon £230. The closing scene on Christmas Eve was perhaps the most amusing of all. The Mayor, Mr Knox, aided by the Town Clerk, Mr,,. Gelling,; auctioned all that remained from the various stalls. At one moment the auctioneer's eloquence v was poured -forth upon,' a tennis. 'apron,' .the next upon a pen- wiper, a baby's boot, a flower pot, a ( meerschaum, a bib and pinafore. 'To each and all his ready' wit ! fitted itself. Filially, in a few pleasant words, Mr Knox thanked everyone present on behalf of Father O'Gara, and proposed three cheers for the ladies. The echoes from the hearty response could scarce have died away, when they were re-awakened by three cheers for the Mayor himself, after which the loyal strains, dear to every* Englishmen, brought, the .bazaar to, end/ hi \ U *1 ? ! / , i)rp
