MESSRS LEWIS AND SIMPSON'S NEW PREMISES, CAMBRIDGE.

PiiouAiiLY no country town in the pro-^ \ince of Auckland has made sucli rapid progress within the past few years :xb Cambridge. There isnothingwhichindicatcs the prosperity of a place, more than the faith manifested by its business people ; and these manifestations usually take the form ot spending huge sums of money in the erection of fine business premises. In fact the erection of addi tional business houses in itself indicates increasing prosperity, which requiies no sophistry to support it. This being the ease, the business prosperity of Cambridge increases daily. New business premises are daily in course of erection, and daily we heai 1 ot others being contemplated. And not only this, but some of those already m existence are being improved upon and enlarged. The latest addition to the former category 'is the handsome, commodious, and extensive business premises of Messrs Lewis and Simpson, which have just! now bpen opened, and. which are stocked with a show of goods' which does credit ,to the business , tact aud enterprise of the proprietors. Though the site of the new building is perhaps not a central one, still it is convenient, and the well finished exterior is sure to attract the eye of the visitor on entering the town. The new building has a frontage of 38 feet to Lake-street, and a depth of 40 feet, and for style and workmanship the exterior, particularly the frontage, is not equalled by any other building of the kind in Waikato. v j lonic columns' of excellent finish, with caps crowned by trusses, support 'the "cornice work of the parapet, which in itself shows off the biiikfiug to 7 great advantage. An ornamental pediment, suri rounded by a flag-staff, and on which is inscribed the words, " Lewis aud Simpson, 1852," divides the paijapet, which, also is adorned at either end with a' handsomely finished finiel. The shop frontage is constituted by three large plate glass windows, and two entrance doors, the latter being recessed. The shop, which is 38 feet x 40 fedt, is roomy and well lighted, and has a high aud well finished ceiling. To the right, on entering the shop, is the ironmongery department. This part pi the premises is fitted up with shelving of appropriate design. In the centre is a large glass case, with sliding sashes, for fche display of plated goods, and the top of the shelving is finished, with entablature, ,f, f and cornice work. At the lower end of the shop, and aj;.the e^d of th^ ironmongery, department, is situated a well fitted-up counting 'house for the accommodation of the scribe of the establishment.
