FEARFUL MINING ACCIDENT IN VICTORIA. [REUTERS TELEGRAMS.]
[Received December 12, 10 p.m.] Melbourne, December 14. News has been received from Oeswick that the Australasian gold mine has been flooded. Forty men Avere at work when the outburst of water occurred. Of these, f on r teen escaped, and 2(i are still under ground. There is ' now forty feet of water in the main shaft, and the pumps available are quite inadequate to cope with tli&j&sk of pumping oat the - mine. Arrangemcn|s' ate being .an^de 'for additional pumps an I 1I 1 engine poAVer.' Faint hopes are entertained, however, that those in the mine will succeed in escaping. The scene at tho^ mouth of the mine whsn the disaster was' made known was most 'distressing. " ' '
[Received December 13th, 1.5 a.m.] Later. Great efforts arc being made at Creswiek to clear the Australasian mine of water, and, by the aid of additional pumps which have been obtained, the depth has already been reduced by six foot. All hope, however, of rescuing the men alive who are undet ground has been abandoned.
