FATAL ACCIDENT near CAMBRIDGE.
Iy cmr last issue we recorded an accident which had befallen Mr Malcolrfi Ren ton', of (Jam bridge, whilst riding home between Cambridge atid Gwynrielands, on Friday evening last. When our informant left, the unfoitunate man was, insensible, and not likely to recover. We regret to learn that on {Saturday morning abou,t> 11 o'clock' Mr Ronton di<kl,<frokii the injuries lie sustained through the accident. It appeals Mr llcnton, who is a draftsman by profession, and in the employment of Mr A. B. .Stubbing, surveyor, for some time past, left' the' residence 'of Mr Stubbing atrGwynnelandsjO^ Friday morning to attend the Native Lands Court at Cambridge, where lie had some business to transact. He remained in town till about six o'clock in the evening, when he started home on horseback. He was met by a peison coming into Cambridge at the firs>fc turn in the road near Fanthams corner, and as the horse was going at an unusually fast pace fhe seemed to have a very uncertain &eat in tho saddle. Going along the straight between the first turn and Fanthams corner the horse had increased its #ace if any thing, and on reaching the latter turning he dived round suddenly, and the lidcr having no command of himself w.is thrown heavily to the ground. A man who was working on the road near by at the time, and who' heard him fall after turning the corner, immediately pro- < ceeded to his assistance, and shortly after ' Mr Northcioft, 11. M., who was on his way to Hamilton, arrived on the'spot. They had the unfortunate man, who appeared to be dying, conveyed to the residence, cf Mr Stubbing on "a hurdle. Mr Stubbing at once despatched' a message for Drs. Waddington and Cushney, but these gentlemen after examining their patient proclaimed his case hopeless. He succumbed on the following morning, having never recovered consciousness. Death resulted from a fracture of the base of the skull. The sad occurrence took every body by surprise, and as the deceased was well and popularly known, much regret was manifested. Deceased was single, and had been a number of years in the colony.
