JUDGE FENTON'S PROPOSALS TO THE NATIVES. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Alexandra, Last Night. Judge Fj'xtox, with Mr Smith, Assistant Surveyor-General, and Mr F. Edgecumbe, met the natives at Whatiwhatihoe tliis morning. Te Wheoro, Manuhiri Titi WJiarekawa, and Taki Whareo were the principal chiefs present, TVahanui and the Ngatimaniapoto nit attending. Te Wheoro opened the proceedings, explaining that Mr JFenton proposed to return such of the "Waikato lands as would be available to those hapus who, having no Lands to reside on, desired to return to their own places. All expressed their satisfaction with the proposal, but sonic appeared to think that until Tawhiao and Mr Bryce had come to some arrangement confusion would result. Mr Pen ton said there must be no mistake. His was a different business altogether. He had nothing to say or do about Tawhiao's sovereignty ; that was tor Mr Bryce and Tawhiao to settle. His was a desire to see them return to their own lands in a fair position. Mr Fenton evidently has the confidence of the natives. They all express satisfaction with the proposals, and determined that Tawhiao should appoint a party to go and see what laud remained for them.
