THE CAMBRIDGE JRACECOURSE.

Ouk Cambridge readers will be glad to j learn that there is now every possibility of a settlement being avived at by those interested in the above course, and that before long a good raca meeting is likely to take place on the ground. Through the misunderstanding as to title, which had arisen between Mr Fantham and some of the gentlemen who bought part of the Gwynneland estate adjoining the racecourse property, it had become evident of late that something would have to be done by way of settling the matter. Mr Fantham offered the course grounds to a gentleman interested in the matter at £13. The Jockey Club took up the offer, and have agreed among themselves to give Mr Fantham what he asks, if the promoters of the grand-stand will agree to sell their interest. In other words the Jockey Club will not take any steps in the matter whatever unless they are able to have the entire institution, stand, course, and all belongings and titles exclusively in their own hands. This, it will be admitted, considering the experiences of the past, is a very wise proceeding. As representatives of the club, Messrs J. Foriest and Hewitt waited upon Mr E. Maclean, one of the promoters, at Fen Court on Tuesday ; also upon Mr J. A. Donglas, another promoter. These gentlemen refused to do anything in the matter unless the 1 overtures of the club were put in writing, so that they could be forwarded to, and considered by the other promoters .Should the matter of the racecourse be now settled, a scratch race meeting will be held at Cambridge on New Year's Day, for local horses, when the gate money will be given in prizes. The autumn meeting would be held about the end of February.

Our reporter telegraphs last night : — " I believe the racecourse affair has been satisfactorily settled."
