MAORI DOG NUISANCE AT CAMBRIDGE.
Astrvnuer visiting Cambridge at the present time could not be otherwise than disagreeably surprised at the number of vicious looking mongrel dogd which abound in every quarter ot the town, a proportion of which arc either sadly maimed or badly diseased. Indeed, the stock of these mangy mongrels, which are at present to be found about the town, is sufficient to impress upon the mind of the visitor that the inhabitants) are extensive dog fanciers, and that their taste is deplorably bad, or else that they go in for the wholesale manufacture ot the article, and that dogs are the staple export of the town. Such surmises on the part of a casual visitor would not be unreasonable in the slightest. Round the door of every butcher's shop, scratching in the sweepings of almost eveiy store, and in fact hanging about the very bars of the hotels, these repugnant-look-ing curs abound. Night is sometimes made hideous witli their bowlings., LiUe the sweep and the school-boy, they are always attacking the more presentable atid better bred dogs of pakehas, simply because they look better tliau themselves. " As these animals are unregistered, we would recommend that the law should be put in force, and after, say, a few days notice, all dogs seen about the town unregistered be destroyed. This woald probably modify the nuisance.
