Spring Meeting.
THEpubHcpatronage.atthe spring meeting on Tuesday was very meagre, probably owing to there being no public, holiday to enable townspeople to visit the racecourse, and on the other hand no doubt the country settlers were making the best of the propitious rains which have been falling recently. Still the new departure inaugurated by the club was successful, and the meeting on the whole passed off in a most satisfactory manner. Mr Impey'o band was on the ground, and added much to the day's amusement. The following are the details of the races :—: — TRIAL STAKES of 1003OVS. Billingsgate was the first to spring, but a few strides placed Merlin in the front. Fishgirl had lain back, but made an advance movement at the cutting, and sought a lead, but was unable to achieve it. Kalo came up with a good stride, collared and passed the others in succession, and fairly cantered home, winning without an effort from the distancepost. Billingsgate did not finish. He was pulled up in the straight and was 60 much broken down that his best friends hardly expect ever to see him on the turf again. HANDICAP AT7RDLE BACK, of 60sOVS.
