PUBLIC WORKS IN THE CAMBRIDGE DISTRICT.

Wk are glad to notice that since the closing of the last session of l'arliament many of the grants seonreil during the session, through the perseverance of our members, to be spent on works in the Cambridge and outlying districts arc now being properly disposed of. The completion of the works referred to is of great importance to the prosperity and general welfare not only of Cambridge, but the entire Waikato district, and from what we can gather they will be completed at no very distant date. The first is the

Karapiro Bridge. In regard to this work, of which so much has been heard from time to time, Messrs Hales and Knorpp, Government Engineers, visited Cambridge, recently to examine the structure and site. Mr Hales considered two additional spans necessary to the efficiency of the bridge, and stated that if the board \\ onld give effect to his suggestion in this matter he would recommend the Government to increase the grant from £-400 to £(500. A special meeting of the board was immediately convened to consider Mr Hales' statement, when it was resolved to erect the two spans if the Government would advance the money. Mr J. B. Whyte was immediately communicated with, and a reply was received from him to the effect that the Government grant would be increased £200 if Mr Hales 1 requirements were fulfilled. Mr Hales considers two addition spans necessary on the east side, so that the water, in case of flood, may noj; damage the earthwork. Mr Benzoni, U.S.P.W. Department, communicated with the town board, informing them that a progress payment on the work of £266 would be forwarded immediately.

The Rotorua Road. Owing to the strong representation made through the chairman of the town board to the Government on the matter of the construction of this road, which, it was alleged, would be greatly delayed if contract labour was not resorted to, the Government have determined to complete the work in the way suggested. In reply to Mr T. Wells' letter on this matter to Mr J. B. Whyte, the latter said that the road would be completed by contract, the conditions of which would ensure the road through the bush being open for wheeled traffic at the end of the summer of the present year. The constabulary would be allowed to complete the road formation work on both, sides of the bush.

Taupo Road. In the matter of the construction of this road, Mr JVells has received a communication from Mr Whyte, stating that the grant passed last session would bo expended at once.

Cambridge-Tauranga Road. A Government communication has also been received through Mr J. B. Whyte on this matter, to the, effect • that the unexpended balance of the grant of last session will be paid to the two county councils when the bodies can complete the work under the Roads Construction Act. The two councils are requested to prepare plans and estimates immediately. '
