THE RAGLAN MAIL CONTRACT.
It is satisfactory to have to record that the Government have so far recognised the agitation which has taken place here, also in Waikato, in regard to their action about the Raglan mail service, that Mr Biss, Chief Postmaster, has been sent here to enquire into the whole matter. On his arrival here he was interviewed by Mr Duncan, chairman of the Raglan County Council, and Mr Ellis, in reference to the subject, and subsequently a deputation, consisting of the previously named gentlemen and Messrs Wallis, J.P., Powell, Ngatipare Karaka, and Penchami Kiwi, also waited upon him. Mr Duncan, who acted as spokesman, briefly explained to Mr Biss the purport of their business, informing him that the residents in Raglan and elsewhere were so anxious to know how the state of affairs stood in reference to the mail service that they should now feel much indebted to him if he would kindly satisfy their desires in this respect. It will only be necessary to say that Mr Biss received the deputation in the most courteous manner, and although he could not as yet speak very decidedly as to the mail service, still he might say that he would do all in his power to give effect to the strongly expressed wishes of the public generally, that the mails should be carried by coach. He might say that the road over the Hakamarata ranges was in a far better condition than had been represented, and he saw no reason why a coach should not be driven on it during the greater portion of the year. The deputation having thanked Mr Biss, then withdrew. — (Own Correspondent, yesterday.)
