Presentation to Tawhiao.
After a considerable interval, during which Mr Bryce and Tawhiao weic sitting together' on the ground, the latter smoking, with an air of deep meditation, a pipe presented him by Mr Butler, Mr Bryce rose and said : Tawhiao, before I go away just now, I would like to make you a present from the Government. It is a personal present for yourself. I give it now in connection with the opening of the bridge. I have had this medal struck specially for yourself, and for this occasion. It is a gold medal struck with your name on it, and it will admit yon on all the railways in New Zealand as long as you live. That is my present not to the tribe, but to Tawhiao. Tawhiao who stood up to receive the present, said : "I have nothing to say but that I have taken it in my hand and received it." The medal is attached to a blue ribbon, and is about the size of a florin. On one side are the words, " Free pasa New Zealand Railways," and on the other side the name " Tawhiao " is set forth inside'a wreath of ferns.
