SAD OCCURRENCE AT POKENO. Attempted Murder and Suicide.
Early on Thursday morning a gentleman named Richard l)i\on Long, living at Pokeuo, was shot at wlnlc asleep by his sou, Albert Edward Long, a lad nineteen years of age. The ball entered behind the ear aud passed close to the brain, but it is not thought the injury m ill prove Jatal. The would-be murderer then presented the revolver to his own head, inflicting, it is thought, fatal injuries. Dr Dalziel, of Pukekohe, and Dr Sandes, of Bombay, wcie speedily in attendance, and did all in their power to alleviate the sufferings of the wretched youth and his victim. They eNtr.u-ted the bullet from Mr Long's head, but could not find that in the son's. It \vns> thought they would be removed to the Auckland Hospital the same afternoon, but the dangerous nature of their injuries precluded the possibility of this. No cause is assigned for the act, as the father aud son vere on the best of terms. '1 he latter, however, since his return from Tauranga, where he had been on a visit, had evinced a morose disposition, and it is believed his mind had finally lost its balance.
