VISIT OF THE WAIUKU CAVALRY TO TE AWAMUTU.

The representative team of the Waiuku Cavahy, arrived in Te Awamutu by tram on Tuesday evening la&t, in charge of Captain Haralm. A visit from the Cavalry has for some time past been looked forward to by the Te Awamutu troop, and the manner in which the visitors were received on their arrival at Te Awamutu on Tnesday evening was sufficiently indicative of a pleasant meeting. In the evening a dinner was given in their honor at the Commercial Hotel, whcie Host Devin amply proved his ability as a caterer. About forty sat down to dinner, the chair being occupied by Major Jackson. After the usual loyal and patriotic toasts had been disposed of. Captain Rutherford proposed the health of the visiting team. In doing so he had to express the satisfaction of the Te Awamutu men in seeing a representative team of the Wamlui Cavalry amongst them ; as they would now have an opportunity of retrieving their lost laurels. Captain Hamlin, in responding said both lie and his men hail looked f orw tail with much pleasure to their visit to Te Awamutu ; and from his experiences that evening, he felt suie the vi&it -would be as enjoyable as they had anticipated. He considered these contests were the foundation of much good, and tended to excite emulation amongst the men. Captain Hamlin in pioposing the health of the. Te Awamutu team, hope 1 the contest on the following dly would be a \\ ell-contested one, and that neither troop would be subjected to an ignomimious defeat. The toast of Sergt-Major Carley was proposed by Trooper Gresham, and suitably responded to. Several other toasts were proposed, and the evening was brought to a most harmonious close.

The Contest. On Wednesday morning both teams proceeded to tlie taiget grounds. SergtMajor Carley and Tiumpcter Willcox were elected markers. The weather tliroughout the match was very unfavourable, the wind blowing in gusts fiom light; to left the whole of the day. Tlie excitement during the coute&t was very great, the shooting being extiemely close. The scoring at the 200 yds range resulted in a tie ; and at the 800 yds range another tie was made. At tlie end of the sixth round at the 400 yds range, the teams tied again ; but in the last round the Te Awamutu men succeeded in getting seven points ahead. The contest after the sixth round was of a most exciting nature. The Te Awamutu team can compliment themselves on the fact that they aie the only marksmen who have inflicted a defeat on the Waiuka Cavalry.

[ A very enjoyable ball was held in the Public Hall on the night I after the match, when a large number were present, The music was supplied by the Te Awamutu band, under Mr Sibly, and dancing was kept up till an early hour on Thursday morning.

Waiuku v. Hamilton Troop. The match was shot at the range, East Hamilton, on Thursday. The weather was fine, but towards evening the sun shining in the eyes of the marksmen greatly affected the shooting, which at the last rauge was very indifferent.
