SINGULAR OCCURENCE AT WELLINGTON [BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

Wellington, Thursday. Quite a sensation .was caused in town this evening, when' it was ascertained that a well known offical had attempted suicide, under somewhat peculiar circumstances. It appeals that Mr W. M. Lewis, Assistance Crown Law Officer, was to be married this afternoon to a young lady (Miss Dyer), but at the appointed time for the cermony to take place he failed to put in an appearance, and after waiting some time, the assemblage was informed that Mr. Lewis had been taken seriously ill, and could not attend. It is generally understood that Mr Lewis made an attempt on his life by cutting his throat, but no definite information, however, has leached town as to his condition, although the wounds, are not believed to be of a sqvious nature, i He resides at Newton. j WFiiiiiXGTON, Last Night. It is very difficult to obtain full particulars in connection with the alleged attempted suicide last night.' Various rumours have been afloat all the morning, some contending that Lewis was only suffering from ceiebral congestion and other brain trouble. It is, however, well known that Lewis did make an at tempt to cut his throat and that this fact was admitted by Lewis' mother to the mother of the young lady about to be married. The wounds aie not at all of a serious nature, and the patient is progressing as well as can be expected.
