WELLING TON, Last Night. The comet was scon this morning to great advantage, although displaying a marked diminution in size and brilliancy. The lion. Mr Rolloston has returned from the South, and leaves for Napier on Wednesday, where ha will meet Mr Bryce.
CHRISTCHURGH, Last Night. Gorton ami Trinket have been scratched for the C.J.C. Handicap. The eight hours go-as- you -please handicap, at the diill-.shed, on Satin day, was won by O'Connor, scratch man. -who gave some of his opponents one hour's start. O'Connor, in seven hours, covered 43} miles ; Cusack, the second man, 43} miles in seven find a-half hours ; Bull, third man, 3S{ miles in seven hours and 34 minutes.
THAMES, Last Night. Thomas Smith, a storekeeper at Whangamata, aged 09, died at the hospital. He was riding from Puriri on Saturday, when hia horse rolled over him, and he died from internal injuries. Alex. Henderson, carpenter, aged 75, went into the house of Jas. Mann, a carpenter at Hnpe Creek, at seven this morning. _ He said "Good morning Jimmy," and immediately fell down dead.
