CAMBRIDGE HIGHWAY DISTRICT.

A pdblic meeting of the ratepayers of the above district, convened by advertisement, was held in the Cambridge Public Hall on Saturday afternoon last, Mr Jas. Taylor in the chair. There were about thirty ratepayers present.— The chairman explained the object of the meeting.— Mr Forrest said they were all aware that there were numerous roads in the district badly in need of formation, and others badly in need of repair, together witn many other works which demanded immediate attention. It was to carry out these that they were asked to agree to the levying of a special rate. A list of the works demanding immediate attention were then submitted to the meeting. These were of such a nature as to be almost indispensable. The roads proposed to be constructed were necessary to facilitate traffic between the main road and the various railway stations between Hamilton and Cambridge, and as the late board had bequeathed a heavy debt to their successors, they had now nothing but an empty treasury to go on with. Consequently, they felt justified in asking the ratepayers to concede to the levying of a special rate. By levying this rate they would be able to get from the Government, under the* ftoads and Bridges Construction Act, 18S2, a subsidy of £3 for every £1 raised and thus by raising £200 by a special rate, they would have a subsidy to get of £600, thus giving them £800 to spend. After some considerable discussion, the intention of the board having been generally approved of, a resolution to the effect that a rate of 6d in the £ should be levied on all rateable property in the district was carried unanimously.

Ordinary Meeting. At the ordinary monthly meeting of the board which followed it was agreed to give effect to the resolution passed at the public meeting, and to proceed with the various works proposed. All accounts were passed for payment with the exception ot an account of Mr G. F. Hoskiug, which was allowed to stand over until it should be taxed, the prices charged being considered exorbitant.
