FIELDING, Last Night. The Maori chief, Takana Te Kawa, of the Ngatikawha tribe, was buried yesterday. There was a great ceremony, and •AOO Europeans were present. A great feast will be held on Tuesday and. Wednesday. Maoris from Waikato, Napier and Otaki are now collecting food for a thousand persons.

Queen of Beauty. THAMES, Last Night. An interim retorting on Saturday, for the Queen of Beauty, gave 3060z. of gold for the fortnight's crushing. The amount treated was about 200 loads. Thanksgiving services were held at S. George's Church, yesterday, for the victory in Egypt. A conference of the borough and county councils was held this morning to consider some of the telegrams received from Mr Sheehan re the proposed formation of railway from Kopu to Te Aroha. The telegrams were to the effect that agents were in Wellington representing some millions of English money for investment in public works in New Zealand. The agents are ready to make the railway if concessions similar to those granted the Tauranga and Rotorua Company were gained from Government. Later telegrams , from Mr Sheehau says it is likely Government will grant concession, and Ministers are friendly disposed to the scheme. One of the agents will visit the Thames. A reply was sent to Mr Sheehan that the local bodies approved of the construction of a railway by a public company, and will afford all assistance in their power towards the tin therancc of the project. It is feared theie is not enough laud en route to encourage the construction under the Railway Construction and Land Act.

O AMARU, Last Night. A fire at the house of Alfred Dray oil Saturday night was extinguished before much damage to the buildings was done, but an infant was so badly burned that it died this morning. The fire was caused by a candle left burning.

NEW PLYMOUTH", Yesterday. On Saturday afternoon, three brothers named McDonald were felling bush in the vicinity of the Durham road, Inglevrood, when a tree falling collided with another that had been cut, which fell upon Ewen McDonald, killing him instantaneously.
