HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The adjourned meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council* was :held last night.-There'were-present : Sis' Worship the Mayor, Cra. Jones, Bradley, McDonald, Yon Sturtner, Tippeu, Lovett and Peat. The first business was the appointment of a Works Committee. —Cr. Yon. Stunner moved, that the Works Committee be composed of the whole council. He argued that many works were authorised by the council of which the majority knew nothing about. The council now had not much money, and the committee "would not have such arduous work to perform^ - He was of opinion that the council should hold monthly meetings alternately with the meetings of the works committee. The, motion not finding a seconder, lapsed. —Cr Peat moved that the old commitee, viz., Crs. Peat, McDonald, Tippen, Jones and Lovett, be re-elected.—Cr. McDonald declined to act.—Cr Peat suggested that Cr. Bradley's name be substituted. —Cr. Bradley declined.—Cr. Peat nominated Cr. Yon Stunner, who also declined to act on the committee as at present constituted. —Cr. McDonald then consented to act. — The motion was then carried, the Mayor andCr. Yon Sturmerdissenting.—Cr. Peat was elected chairman of the works committee.—The whole council was elected a finance committee. —Cr3. Jones and Tippen were appointed a furze committee. —Cr. Peat was authorised to sign cheques with the Mayor and Treasurer. —The Mayor reported that the manager of the Bank of New Zealand had agreed to allow the amount of the overdraft to be £700. —1t was resolved to retain the servicfs of the tollkeeper from week to week.
The Drainage Scheme. The council went into committee.—The Town Clerk read the report of the engineer, Mr W. D. Campbell. The report was of great length, and was accompanied by plans, maps, etc. His estimate for draining Hamilton East was £1400; or for carrying off rain water only, £1150 ; or for house drainage only, £800. For Hamilton West the estimate was £1200, of which sum £120 should be paid by private property owners. On the motion of the Mayor the report was referred to the Works Committee, to repoit on it at the next sitting of the council.
Proposed Dissolution of the Borough. During the conversation which ensued on the subject of the drainage scheme, Cr. Bradley said he understood that it was contemplated to take steps to dissolve the borough, in which case they could not go on with the drainage. ' After some further remarks on the same subject, Cr. Yon Stunner said he was strongly in favor of dissolution, in proof of which he had prepared the following notice of motion for next meeting :— "That the object for which Hamilton was constituted a borough, namely, the construction of a free bridge over the Waikato, having been accomplished, and a measure of local self-government, the Town Districts Act, 1881, having been meantime passed by the Legislature, it is desirable that this council take the necessary initiative steps to have the corporation of the Borough of Hamilton dissolved with a view to allow the separate portions of West and East Hamilton the opportunity of being constituted town districts, under the above-mentioned Act." This was all the business, and the council rose.
