BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.
A public meeting of the Cambridge branch of the above society was held in the Cambridge Public Hall on Thursday evening last, Mr T. Wells, in the chair. The attendance was very poor, there being not more than forty people present. The Rev. W. Evans having engaged in prayer, and the chairman having addressed a few remarks to the meeting, the report of the committee was read by the Yen. Archdeacon Willis. The report j showed that the Cambridge branch of the society had been formed iv April, 1880. The duties devolving on the local committee were represented as being the establishment and supply of a depot in the town where copies of the Holy Scriptures in English and Maori might be readily and cheaply obtained, and the collection of subscriptions towards the general objects of the society. Mi- A. Hughes having undertaken the charge of the local depot, the committee were desirous of publicly thanking him for the valuable aid he had rendered the society. A stock of bibles and testaments in English tand Maori has been available, sufficient to meet the requirements of all classes, and varying in style and price from the large family bible at 275, down to the small pocket testament at 4d. Copies of the revised new testament are also kept in stock. The body of collectors had performed their duty in a most faithful and satisfactory manner, having collected a sum which established the depot on a firm basis, enabling the committee to pay cash for all purchases on the depotaccount, and leaving any further sums to be collected in the district available for remittance towards the funds of the present society. In conclusion, the committee hoped that their efforts to enable all within the district to obtain a copy of the Holy Scriptures would be largely appreciated and turned to practical account, feeling assured that no greater benefit can be bestowed on our rapidly increasing population than that of a thorough knowledge of the Word of God. — The report was unanimously adopted. — The following balance-sheet was then read and adopted :— To collection at pnblic meeting, £2 10s 9d ; subscriptions collected by committee, £3 15s 6d ; by Miss Reynolds, £3 5s ; by Miss Caley, £4 0s 9d ; by Misses Alford and Davis, £12 Is ; by Mrs Ellis and Miss Bright, £4 14s 6d ; by Mrs Jno. Fisher and carried. The hymn, " All people that on earth do dwell," was sung, after which the Rev. W.
