The Porte exhibits the utmost disinclination to commit itself to any definite policy in Egypt uutil England has announced what its intentions are. Italy has withdrawn from the Protectorate of the Suez Canal on England intimating that it is quite prepared to provide for its protection. The Parisian Press now urge the English Government to continue the joint control with France in Egypt, and favours what would practically amount to the establishment of a protectorate. The Ulemas have promised to use their utmost influence to ally the spirit of fanaticism which has been aroused amongst a large section of the Mahommedan population. Salakieh has surrendered to our troops.
