DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT SYDNEY TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF THE EXHIBITION BUILDINGS. Damages Half-a-Million.
[renter's tklkgram.] Eeceived September 22, 11.30 a.m. Sydney, Yesterday, 9 a.m. ' The Garden Palace, situated in the inner domain, the building in which the New South Wales International Exhibition of 1879 was held, has been totally destroyed by fire. The conflagration broke out at 5 o'clock thi3 morning, and is still raging. The sight of the burning buildings is most grand, aud thousands of people are now on the spot. All efforts to save the palace have been without . avail, and nothing can prevent its complete destruction. The offices' in the occupation of the Lands Department, the Census Office, and the Harbor Office were in the buildings, and it is feared that there will be a serious loss of official documents, and other Government property. Sydney, Yesterday, 11 a.m. All the archives of the Mining Depart ment, the Census Offices, and the offices of . the Liiincean Society, together with the national collections of minerals in the Technological Museum have been destroyed at the Garden Palace. The estimated loss amounts to half -a- million sterling. One of the buildings fell with a crash twenty minutes after the fire broke out. The destruction is complete.
