FREETHOUGHT. TO THIS EDITOR
Sir, -Your correspondent, "Freethinker, " of Pukerimu, in his strictures on Mr Holyoake, states, that if man "has a right to think as he pleases, then he has a right to act as he pleases." A most astounding assumption certainly, which only shallow thought could have produced. The marvellous reason given for this assumption is, " for thought is the basis of action." Many people think that Freethought is necessary for right action. We know it is for responsible action. If the thought is not free that produces actions, the individual acting: can scarcely claim merit or incur blame. Is Freethinker, who is ready to think for others who may not think for themselves, ready to take the results of their actions on his shoulders ? If he is not, let him not offer his services to think for them. "Nor give advice as to who is to think for them. Alas for G. J. Holyoake ! Who would ever have thought with his splendid English reputation, that he would have been so utterly demolished by the profound arguments of the deep thinker of Pukerimu.— lam, Sir, yours respectfully, Sept. 12th. Examiner.
