THE LATE POISONING CASE. [BY TELEGRAPH.- OWN CORRESPONDENT.] AUCKLAND, Last Night.

At the inquest, to-day, on Mrs Cleaver, Dr Richardson was the only witness examined, and he was cross-examined at great length by Mr Cooper, solicitor. His testimony was most emphatic regarding the discovery of arsenic in the body. He gave details of tests applied, the results being the same in all the cases. Superintendent Thomson asked whether the girl running out into the gai-den immediately after her confinement might not have produced inflamation of the bowels with symptoms observed Dr Richardson said this would not account for the symptoms. He believed deceased's death was produced by an irritant poison, and bad no doubt the crystals obtained were arsenic. Replying to Superintendent Thomson, Dr Richardaon said : —Mrs Butler gave me some scraps of paper which she had picked up in the yard, and which she supposed to have been thrown into the vomit by deceased. I placed them in a jar in my house, and did not remove them until Detective Strathearn called, when I gave him them after tearing off a portion. I found a whitish substance adhering to it, but it was not of a crystaline character. I applied Reinseh's test to this substance, but got no result. The substance was observable to the naked eye, and looked like fine particles of oatmeal. I felt sure after I had applied the test that it did not contain arsenic, mercury or antimony, The inquest was adjourned till to-mor-row.
