The Late Poisoning Case. The recent mysterious poisoning case remains as much a mystery as ever, though the evidence obtained by the police goes to prove, as conclusively as circumstantial evidence can prove, that the unfortunate woman did not meet her death by her own hand. It is understood that the police have been unable to ascertain where the poison was procured. The inquest will be resumed at 2 p.m. to-morrow, before Dr Goldsbro', coroner. It is probable that after taking the evidence of Drs. Richardson and Walker, and of Mr Pond, who has been engaged in making an analysis of the stomach, an adjournment till Tuesday next will be applied for. Mr Theophilus Cooper has been retained to watch the proceedings on behalf of Thomas Cleaver, and he has already collected a mass of evidence which will tend to place Cleaver's conduct in respect to the girl in a much better light than has hitherto appeared. Mr Cooper intends to show that Cleaver, in common with the members of his family, was very solicitous for the girl's health, and unremiting in his attention to her during her fatal illness.

Grey, to the Governorship. r'^jrheiSftwv reporter telegraphs from Wellington to-day :—A rumour lias been i«tinWculatiQ»iiere^iat^ir & Grey's
departure for Auckland was caused by a communication from Mr Gladstone, referring to the Governorship of New Zealand. The rumor is to the effect that Mr Macandrew had written to the Home Government representing the desirability of appointing Sir G. Grey Governor of New Zealand, and that an answer had now come, which, if not altogether definite, indicated that Sir G. Grey will probably succeed Sir Arthur Gordon. On inquiry, I find that Mr Macandrew did write such a letter three years ago, but not since, and I cannot discover any reason for believing that the present report has any substantial foundation.
