CAMBRIDGE RAILWAY STATION SITE AND TOWN ENDOWMENTS.
At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Cambridge Town Board, held on Monday evening last, the following communication on the above matters was read from Mr J. B. Whyte M.H.8.. :— Wellington, Aug. 30th 18S2. Thos. Wrixs Esq, Dear Sir, — I have hoped against hope that I would be able to carry out the wishes of the town board with regard to the unsold allotments in Cambridge. I regret, however, to say that I have been unsuccessful. When I arrived in Wellington I waited upon the Premier, who expressed hinuelf as an\.ious to have these allotments vested in the town board, but I feared th.it if it wee done it would be immediately followed by many other similar demands from man] other parts ot the colony. However, he advised me to apply in writing to the Government, and when it came before the Cabinet that ho would do what he could. This I did, and some time afterwards I received a roply to the effect that Cambridge had already, or rather might have at ,my time, more than the usual proportion of reserves under the plan of Towns Act given to it. A copy of a letter which was sent to the town board some time ago to this effect was enclosed. I presume you have this letter. I still hoped, however, that something mißlit be done, and being: a member of the Waste Lands Committee I had every opportunity ofjudging whether the thing could be managed or not. lam now however, reluctantly driven to the conclusion that it cannot be done. We must, therefore, be content with having the reserves which were set apait for municipal purposes, and which by the way, are very numerous, vested in the 'own board, and also the town hall site. This has been put in trim and cannot take very long to complete. I may add while upon this subject that two similar cases have come before the Waste Lands Committee, and been similarly disposed of. I have been pushing the matter of the railway station site as much as I can, but have been unable so far to get any definite answer, nor will I until the estimates arc passed and the press of business over. However, I may say that the chief cng-ineer says that they must have Whitakcr Tci race, as without it they cannot get sufficient straight chainage, and that without that they would have to change the site to the town belt. I think it not improbable that they will buy the additional land. The Survojor»General told me that cortain standard points would be fi\cd by the Government in the town whereby the surveys could be certified. I think the Colonial Treasurer's Local Finance Bills aro cortain to pass this Session. There will also he grants for the Cambridge, Tauranga, Rotorua and Taupo roads. The railway also will be pushed on vigorously. I think the Session will close in about ten days, when I hope to see you and other Cambridge friends. — I am, Yours faithfully, J. B. Whytc. After some comment on the matters dealt with in the above, the chairman thought Mr Whyte was entitled to the thanks of the board for the manner in which he looked after their business during the sessiqn. In fact Mr Whytc had not only e* erfced himself qu behalf of the people of Cambridge, but of the entire district which he represents. — The other members of the board having endorsed the chairman's opinion, on the motion of O. Kirkwood it was unanimously agreed " That a vote of thanks be tendered Mr Whyte for the interest which he has taken in forwarding all matters connected with the town of Cambridge during the present session."
