THE ALL EG ED A TTEMPT TO MURDER BARLOW.

The following was published as an extra on Tuesday morning, and has already been seen by most of our leaders :—: — At 4 o'clock on Tuesday morning, Mr E. Hope, Conatables Allen and Sole arrived in Hamilton in a buggy and pair from Alexandia with Bailow, the captor of Winiata, from which place they had started at 11 o'clock last night. From the meagre particulars supplied by Barlow, it appears that he had been in Alcxandia since Saturday on business looking after his horses, but as he kept quiet few knew of his arrival. However, it is very evident that some one must have seen him and conveyed the news to the King Countiy. Yesterday he spent the (lay in company with one of the king's sons, (Tv Tawhiao) in Alexandiia, and a lot of other natives, who were di inking with him. About halt-past 10 last night he went to assist Tv Tawhiao to get his horses out of the hotel stables where Barlow's hor&cs were also secured to make an early stait this morning. Just as Barlow was in the act of opening the door, two shots were fired at him, one of which struck him across the breast passing through his waistcoat and coat. Barlow immediately drew his revolver and fired two shots at a native who was i mining away. At the discharge of the second shot Tv Tawhiao cried "I'm &hot," which prevented Barlow from following up his intended murderer. Bailow was afraid to fiic again, for fear of Tv Tawhiao's death being laid to him. The Constabulary, upon hearing ot the affair, under command of Captain Gascoine, Sergeants Hallett and Dunn, immediately scoured the surrounding country in search o the assassin, avlio had evidently cleared off. Captain Gascoigne, deeming it prudent for Barlow's safety, at once ordered a mounted escort to convey him as far as Ohaupo, and two constables to take him on to Hamilton, where they arrived shortly after four o'clock this morning. Barlow show ed our reporter the shot marks, and it was very evident that he had a narrow escape with his life. It is to be hoped that the would-be-assassin will soon be in the hands of justice. Barlow declared his intention of not visiting Alexandra again, and said it was the most miraculous escape he ever had. His visit was for the purpose of getting his horses which he had left behiud him after the capture of Winiata, which he succeeded in doing. Our Alexandra correspondent telegraphs yesterday :—" Your ' extra', containing an account of the attempt on the life of Barlow, the captor of Winiata, at Connells Hotel, on Monday night astonished a good many. Barlow's arrival here on Saturday last was quickly telegraphed to the King Country, and his presence was greatly resented by Winiata's friends. He was warned of danger, but appears to have neglected the warning. His own sense ought to have told him that Tv Tawhiao's presence in his company was no protection amongst Winiata's family and sympathisers. His visit here was a great mistake at the present time. The natives to a man deny that he was fired upon, and aver that he only came for a purpose of lv's own to gain more reward. The whole affair requires keen investigation. I closely examined the spot yesterday ; the marks of the bullet are distinctly traced through the door of the stable and partition were all trace is lost. A native, one of Barlow's own people, and who was in his company last night at the time the shots were fired, distinctly stated to the natives at the meeting yesterday at Whatiwhatihoe that he stood behind Barlow on his visit to the stable, and hoard no shots but those fired by Barlow himself, Barlow was about the settlement daily, and was seen and apparently courted by his own people since his arrival here.

Our Cambridge reporter informs us that the news of the attempted assassination of Barlow at Alexandra on Monday evening was received by the public there with expressions of incredibility. Some seemed to think that Barlow, for purposes of notoriety, by which he could make himself a prize for an enterprising Auckland showman, had pre-arranged the whole affair, and having hung his coat and vest on the stable door fired the shots through them himself.
