HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the council wdb held on Monday night. Present : His Worsh'p the Mayor, Crs. Junes, McDonald, Lovetfc, Peat, Qualttough, Tippen, and Bradley.— After boino preliminary business a letter was mid from Mr A. J. Hunter, Resident Engineer, stating that he would survey the piers of the Hamilton traffic bridge as soon as possible. Regarding the cutting in Victoria-stieet he had not as yet received any instructions. — Mr J. S. Edgecumbe wrote, asking to have the lease of allotment 372, borough endowment, put up to auction. — The Mayor deprecated the leasing ot borough property at present in view of the depressed state of the market, but after some discussion it was agreed to offer the lease for sale, along with certain domain allotments already agreed to be leased. The upset price was fixed at 20s per acre per annum. — The Works Committee reported on works done, in hand and in prospect. — The Mayor asked if the school yards had been gravelled in accordance with the wish of the council. — The chairman of the Works Committee (Or. Peat) said they had been repaired as he thought proper. — The Mayor said the council had laid it down that they were to be done properly. He was satisfied so far as the West school was concerned, but he wished to know whether that on the East side of the river had been attended to. He referred to this because he understood the schoolmaster, Mr Maberly, had expressed an opinion to the effect that the ratepayers' money ought .not to be [diverted to such purposes. — Cr. Bradley warmly defended the expenditure. — Cr. Tippen said it was more necessary that they should put the roads over which the children came to school* in good repair. He belie\ ed the school yards were infinitely dryer than many other parts of the town. — Cr Peat said all that was necessary had been done. He would say, however, that after all that had been said he was astonished to find the playgrounds so dry. — The statement funds was read as follows : — General account (overdraft), £440 2s 5d ; special fund account (credit), £135 14s 9d. — A number of accounts were passed for payment. — The resolution to make a rate of Is in- the £ for the current year, was confirmed. — The services of the bridge toll collector were retained for the month. — In accordance with notice the Mayor moved ' ' That no more applications for crossings be entertained."—This was carried unanimously. — The Town Clerk reported that nothing had been done in the matter of the remission and refund of tolls taken from the mail coaches. — It was agreed to communicate on the subject with the members for the district. — Cr. Bradley asked what bad become of his motion to vote a sum of money to improve the approaches to the West school.— The Town Clerk said it had been deferred until the council made a tour of- inspection round the borough. — The Mayor said the projected tour had been postponed, but it ought to be made, It was very necessary that they should see for themselves the condition of the roads, in order that with the return of spring they could make provision for effecting repairs. — Cr. Jones spoke in favour of letting the larger works by contract. — The Mayor agreed. He moved ' 'That on a day to be named the council proceed to inspect the borough."— This was seconded by Cr. . Bradley. — Cr. Peat moved, as an amendment, "That the matter -be -left in the hand 3 of the Works Committee."— Cr. McDonald seconded.— For the amendment there voted Crs. Peat, McDonald, Jones, Tippen and Lovetij,: for the motion, the Mayor, Crs. Bradley, and Qualtroughi The amendment was* therefore carried. ,r This ,concluded,.tfie business^ - ,
