SPORTING MEMORANDA.

A bookmaker named Arthur Frederick Brooke was robbed last week of a sum of £237, under peculiar circumstances. Brooke, who lives at 186 Swanson -street, Melbourne, states that he left his home about 8 o'clock in the evening, with the money, which consisted of four £50notes, one £20-note, 10 £l-notes, and £7 in gold, in his possession. At the corner of Little Lonsdale street he was seized with a fit and fell down, and he remembered a nothing further until he found himself in the Melbourne Hospital, to which place he had been taken by a constable. On coining to his senses he inquired for his money, but every penny of it had been taken. The total number of horses up to"J|the present time left in the Melbourne Cup is 108. It has been resolved to hold a Steeplechase meeting at Timaru on September 14th, under the auspices of the (South Canterbury Harrier Club. At the Ascot races, England, Lord Bradford won the Prince of Wales' Stakes, the Ascot Stakes Handicap, the St. James 1 Palace Stakes, the Rons Memorial Stakes, and ran second for the Gold Vase and the Ascot Derby Stakes. N . Mr Lorillard has received a telegram from Pincius, his trainer, who states that the famous Iroquois has quite recovered from the effects of his recent accident, and has resumed work. He will be trained for the autumn campaign, and, mo doubt, the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire will form part of his engagement Blub Gown.
