NEWCASTLE HIGHWAY DISTRIGT.

The first meeting ot the newly-elected board for tins district was held at the residence of Mr Dawson, "Whatavtha, on Monday, the 7th mst. Present : Messrs Dawson, Washer, Macredie and Shepherd. 'Mr Dawson was elected chairman for the current year, and Mr James Wells was appointed secretary and collector on the same terms as last year. — In compliance with a resolution passed at the annual meeting, it was decided to call a special meeting of ratepayers at the Delta Hotel, Ngaruawahia, on Wednesday, August 30th, at 2 o'clock p.m., for the purpose of getting an expression of public feeling with regard to Mr Bomfrey's claim for compensation against the board, an opinion having been expressed that the annual meeting was not sufficiently well attended to justify this matter being dealt with at it. —As it was deemed undesirable to accept the verdict given at the annual meeting with regard to the continuance of the system of cattle fees, it was resolved this subject should also be reconsidered at the proposed meeting at Ngaruawahia. —The secretary was instructed to write to Mr Bomfrey at once, asking if he.would accept the amount specified in his original agreement with the board in 187S, iv full discharge of his claim, or failing this, if he would consent to submit the matto arbitration, and request him to reply before the date fixed ior the meeting. — The board resolved to strike a rate of Is in the £. i
