DEATH OF THR RIGHT REV LORD ABOUT ALC OOK, 0.5.8.
♦ Tiie announcement of the death of the. Right Rev LorfKAbbot Alcock, 0.5.8., will c-Mi-e m'ief to all who have known him. His stay-in Waikato -was of brief duration, but in that short time he gained the affection and < respect of all with whom he" came' in contact. His Lordship was a native of Lancashire, and was born in 1831 at Ince Blundel. He received his early training at the Benedictine Monastry at Amplefortli, and joined the order of .S. Benedict later on in. Italy. In 18")5 he returned from Rome to Ramsgato, in Kent, England, where he laboured as parish priest with great zeal, charity and success. To him, iv a great measure, is due the foundation of the splendid Benedictine Monastry and college of that town, monuments of his zeal for the welfare of youth. He was raised to the abbatial dignity in the year 1870. Towards the clofae of 1876 he went to South Austialia, and undertook the charge of tlie mission of Gawler, near Adelaide, but on the arrival of his brethren, the Benedictine fathers, at Auckland, he leftGawler to join in their labours, ,but at the deep and heartfelt regret of the inhabitants of that town. His loss is keenly felt by his surviving brethren, all of whom were sincerely attached to him by the closest bonds of affection and of a long-standing friendship. The funeral will be at Auckland to-morrow (Sunday), and on this account there will be no services at the Catholic churches of the Waikato on that day, the E,ev. Fathers Luck and O'Gara, 0.5.8., having to go to Auckland to assist at the obsequies.
