HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of the council was held on Monday evening. Present : Hio Worship the Mayor, Crs. Jones, Peat, Lovett, Qualtrough, Bradley and Tippen. The newly-elected councillor, Mr K. McDonald, made the necessary' declaration, and took his seat at the table. A letter from the engineer for the Cook-stieet drainage, Mr W. C. Breakell, was received, stating that Mr Calderwood had been engaged to superintend the work at 10s a day, and that consequently he was entitled to that sum for each day he was so employed. The letter was referred back to Mr Break ell. - The manager of the W.S.N. Co. wrote asking permission to erect an office on the road adjoining lot 411. It was resolved to ask the writer for a sketch plan of the ground desired for the purpose. — An application from Mr J. Cassidy to have a culvert near his propei ty in Cook-street raised, was referred to the Works Committee, with power to carry out the work. — A circular was received fiom the Colonial Secretary's office, drawing the attention of the council to the neces&ity for making by-laws to regulate the storage of kerosene, &c. The Mayor remarked that the circular was only intended to refer to large towns where kerosene was kept in considerable quantities, and could have no reference to Hamilton, — The secietary of Lodge Beta, I.C. wrote asking to have the near road to the cemetery on the East side of the river repaired, as it could not be used at present, .and the road at present used was very long. The Mayor fully endorsed the statements contained in the letter, but was of opinion that nothing could bo done until the fine weather returned. The matter was deferred for the present. — The application of Mr R. Land to have the amount of his fish license, £1, vcr turned, was granted. — The town clerk reported that the lessee of lot 372, borough endowment, Mr Vialou, having failed to pay his last year's rates the lease had been forefeited. It was resolved that tho land revert to the borough.— Mr Walter Mitchell applied to have a culvert put in opposite his property. Granted. — Similar applications from Mr W. F. Bell, Grey-street, and from Mr W. N. Searancke, Ohaupo road, were also granted. The Works Committee reported on works completed and deferred since last meeting. They recommended : — That a fence should be erected around the gravel pits abutting on Victoria-street to prevent the removal of gravel by private persons ; that a box culvert be laid down in Nixqn-street, and that the culvert near McSweeney's, Collingwood-street, be lowered,— The Mayoi? thought the Works Committee had made a mistake in deferring the gravelling of the school playgrounds. The children were suffering greviously, and if the gravel contractor could not carry out the work the council should find somebody else who could.— There was no fire in the school because coal could not be taken up tkere, -and the children were literaily playing in' the mud. — Cr Jones said it was not possible to cart the gravel up in the present weather, and Crs Peat and Tippen spoke, tq the' aame effeqt, 1 both urging that the work be deferred until better weather sets in.-^The Mayor moved that the work bo' done at once.— Cr Bradley, in second' ing this, said the schobl^was the most important institution in their midst, and should be attended to. He agreed with 1 'the Mayor that they should not consult ?the oonvenienae qf the, contractor .^-Cr^ Peat inoved -rind Op Jones'; seconded* an' , amendment "That the workbe;deferred."
