THE LICENSING ACT.
In our issue of the 27th June we published a letter to the member for Waipa from the hotelkeepers of Rangiaohia and Mangapiko requesting him to use his endeavors to obtain a clause to be inserted in the Amendment Act for the purpose of enabling the licensing committees to reduce the amount of the fee payable in country districts. In reply thereto Mr Lewis, of the Central Waikato Hotel, Te Awamutu, has received the following letter from Wellington : — AVellinjrton, lith July, 1882. Dear sir, — I am in receipt of the letter signed by yourself and others asking- me to endeavor to effect an amendment in the Licensing 1 Act in respect to the amount of fees payable for public house licenses in thinly populated localities. In, reply I wish to inform you that at the tune of the passing of the Licensing Act I pointed out to the committee the ver\ thing: of which } ou now complain, but without effect. I have e\ cry reason, however, to behove, judging bv tho amendments that are being pouted in by membeis upon all hands, that opinion m respect to the licenses has been considerably changed since the passage of the act last year. Sympathising as I do with the object of your proposed amendment you may lely upon me using my best ccoitions to assist you.— l have the honor to be, dear sir, yours faithfully, Fred. A. Whuaker. H. Lewis, Esquire, hotelkeeper, Te Awamutu, Waikato.
