Annual Meeting of Ratepayers.

The annual meeting of the ratepayers of this district was held in the Waitetuna school-house, on the 15th inst. There was a good muster of ratepayers considering the weather, which was very boisterous. There was some difficulty in getting a chairman, those proposed decling, but Mr J. C. King was ultimately prevailed upon to take the chair, and the business of the meeting proceeded. The annual balance-sheet was read and after some discussion adopted on the motion of Mr T. Wilson, seconded by Mr S. Wilson. From the balance-sheet it appeared that the total receipts amounted to £517 15s Bd, including Government grant of £400, and the expenditure to £403 9s 3d leaving a balance in hand of £114 6s sd. After this things became a little lively. On the motion of Mr T. Wilson, seconded by Mr S. Wilson, a vote of censure was passed upon the outgoing board, and subsequently a. special vote of censure on their late chairman, was carried. The election of trustees for the ensuing year was proceeded with the following result : — Trustees . S. Wilson, W. Gibbeson, T. Wilson, J. Moon, and Capt. J. C. Johnstone. Auditors : W. Wajlis, and P. Cogswell. Eence-view-ers*O. Wright, A. Kescel. At the close of the meeting, Mr W. Robertson said now that a number of settlers had met together, it would be well to get an expression of opinion as to the exorbitant fees charged for publicans' licenses in this district. It was wellknown that they could not afford to pay the present fee charged, viz., £25. The meeting quite agreed that the fees were much too high, and suggested that the board should refund a portion of the money if it could be done legally. Public houses were required as places of accommodation for travellers and visitors, and where this was the case, the fees ought to be as reasonable as possible. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated • the meeting. At a meeting of the new board Capt. Johnstone was elected chairman, and Mr M. Harsant was appointed clerk and treasurer.
